“The reason people get good ideas in the shower is because it’s the only time during the day when most people are away from screens long enough to think clearly. The lesson is not to take more showers, but rather to make more time to think.”
James Clear in his 3-2-1 Thursday Newsletter
I am expected to make the right decision on the fly. Sometimes I tell people I need a moment or a couple days to think about their question and they seem befuddled …like no one should need time to think. They expect me to have the answers at hand when they need them.
I am good at thinking on my feet, but I also recognize when I need to put more thought into a situation. I like to consider the bigger picture and how my decision may affect a larger group.
I would like to say I spend time thinking every day …but that would not be accurate. I get stuck in the same cycle a lot of people do. Life gets in the way …I get busy, I look at my phone, I watch TV, I play a game, I listen to a podcast or read a book …all things that don’t promote quality thinking time.
However, I do try to include some thinking time during my week while I mow the yard, go for a walk or run, or just sit quietly on patio in the back yard. Other times I tune out for a few minutes in the office and sit in silence and ponder on whatever needs pondering.
How do you make time for thinking?
