Ugh! Another lesson …Another dead tree …or two

I created a new space for my trees to winter over with some brick pavers next to the house where I typically tuck them in around Thanksgiving.

All was well until I checked on them after our deep freeze.

I immediately knew what happened. When the temperatures dropped to zero degrees F there was still warm 50 degree F air coming out of the crawl space vent and the trees could not handle this large differential in air temperatures. I should have known better last fall …I certainly know better now. I didn’t want any further damage so I cut a piece of foam board to fit in the opening. This should stop the issue from happening in future years.

I am sad to lose the trees but also feel fortunate it did not kill the branches on my white pine nearby. There is some damage, but it will recover. I grew the black pine from seed and had been working on them as exposed root pines for the past 5 years. Live and learn.
