The Raven was first published on January 29, 1845. As writers we all hope to create something so timeless. It is near impossible for me to imagine someone reading my work 179 years from now …nearly two lifetimes away. We should all be so lucky to create work that stands the test of time.
I put this short poem together today as I reflected on how much our world has changed since it was published in 1845.
written words everlasting
One hundred seventy-nine years ago
The Raven was published by Edgar Allen Poe
A specific order of the written word
Never before had it been heard
Writer's strive for this perfection
of 26 letters at their discretion
We write and post every day
Hoping you hear what we have to say
Lost in the web of millions of posts
Surely there is the most beautiful prose
Written words, so eloquently stated
Works of art that will never be dated
Never to be read; Never to be rated
Attention today is so fleeting
Who has time for all this reading
Social engineers have stolen our attention
and so with great apprehension
I fear that forever more
Finding art in the newspaper like days of yore
is Nevermore
