Flavor – Questions from Sam

“How would you explain the flavor of an egg to someone who has never had an egg?”

It is a very simple question that is very hard to answer. Most often we describe the flavor of food based on the flavor of other foods. What compares to an egg?

We talked about this as a family and we all started with another question …How was the egg prepared? This is also a good question as it changes the flavor.

Once we settled on a hard boiled egg all started by trying to explain the texture of the egg …but that doesn’t really give someone a sense of the flavor. it does help explain the overall experience of eating the egg, but not flavor specifically.

My wife did the best job: The egg white is more about texture than flavor as it does not have much flavor at all with any cooking method. The yolk has a distinct flavor and, when hard boiled, could be described to have a dry texture with an earthy sulfur flavor, which does not sound very appetizing at all!

I think this question could apply to any food. It can be very hard to explain flavor when the person you are talking to does not have any food they have tried that is comparable.

He always keeps us on our toes!!
