Hardback Book Jackets are a Not for Me

I don’t see the need for book jackets. The first thing I do with a new hardback book is take it off and throw it away. The only value in a book jacket is for marketing and display. It is a tool to convince you to judge a book by its cover. It does not serve a purpose to the reader …at least not to me.

Book jackets duplicate work and cost money and resources. The publisher has to design the hardback cover as well as the book jacket which is duplicate work. It adds a step in the manufacturing process and consumes additional resources from our environment that could be used elsewhere. Libraries have to cover the book jacket in plastic and tape it to the book so it does not get lost. When I read a book with a jacket I worry about it staying crisp and clean.

Overall, book jackets are not for me. I am curious what value you might find in book jackets?
