TITLE | In Praise of Shadows AUTHOR | Jun'ichiro Tanizaki PAGES | 56 SHORT RECOMMENDATION | Very enjoyable

I really liked this book. I would say if you like architecture, design, and Japanese culture you will like this book. It was a short book, but I felt a lot of depth. It really speaks to my desire to be more thoughtful in the things I do. He talks through modern western living as compared to traditional Japanese living and speaks to the things he misses. I feel like our suburban culture has lost touch with designing and building homes that take the environment into account. When I say environment I am not talking about climate change …I am referring to a properly positioned home to take best advantage of prevailing winds for natural air flow, windows facing directions that maximize indoor light and limit thermal gain with large overhangs and well designed landscaping …to name a couple.
He touches on more than just the home. He also talks about traditional Japanese culture. One of the items that sticks with me is the traditional use of wooden utensils and bowls. He mentions the purpose of using wood was to reduce the noise of meal time. Wood is soft and wood utensils on wood bowls or plates creates a soft sound. Our traditional silverware and ceramic plates create sharp and loud sounds. I certainly still use our silverware and ceramic plates, but I enjoy the level of thought traditional Japanese culture put into most things.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and I will read it again. Here is a direct link to the book.
