Old CDs

I grew up in the age of the compact disc. I guess you could say I lived through the entire cycle of the compact disc. I still remember my first Discman and my first CD …Kris Kross “Jump Around”.

This stack of jewel cases and CDs has moved with me from Indiana to Arizona to California and finally back to Indiana. I don’t think I have listened to a CD in at least 4-5 years. I had a 110 disc changer in my early 20’s so all the discs were out of the jewel cases in a plastic bag and the jewel cases were neatly packed in a box in the attic.

They were in a bag in our office closet for the last 10 years because I had high ambitions to rip all the CDs to my iTunes library, but it takes a long time to rip each CD and it seamed like every 4th or 5th disc had at least one scratch that caused a problem reading the disc. We have moved on to Apple and Spotify for our music and have no need for the CDs.

I sat down today to put all the discs back in the jewel cases and it was like walking through a time machine. So many memories are tied to music. I could look at each disc and picture myself in a specific location or at least a particular time in my life.

I fully intended to put all the discs back in the cases, box them up, and drop them at FYE or Half-Priced Books this week. My wife was helping me do this and we did find about 15 of the discs that did not hold any memories, but the rest were put safely back in their jewel cases, neatly packed back in the box, and will go back in the attic for another day.
