Three Questions to Start My Day

I am a construction manager. Currently I am the Executive in charge of Pre-construction with responsibilities to manage our scheduling, virtual design and construction, and pre-construction departments as well as two construction project teams. I deal with a lot of moving parts everyday that can be a challenge. The ability to manage my work load and still finish in 8-10hours per day has taken a long time to master …and sometimes I don’t get there!

This is greatly simplified, but in general I think about three things every morning.

  1. Am I holding anyone up?
    • The first things I tackle are those items others need from me so they can do their jobs
  2. What is urgent or needed the soonest that I need to do myself?
    • Once I make sure my teams can keep moving I look at the items on my list and tackle those that are most urgent.
  3. What is in the parking lot?
    • We all have extracurricular work items that we never seem to get done.
    • These items don’t have a specific deadline, but need to be included at some point.
    • I manage to fit them into my schedule bit-by-bit and it has proven effective for me.
